Jazz defeat Mavs in season opener
Nov 1, 2012 - 4:57 AM Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Mo and Marvin Williams combined for 42 points on Wednesday, leading the Utah Jazz to a 113-94 thumping of the Dallas Mavericks at EnergySolutions Arena.Mo Williams finished with 21 points and six assists, while Marvin Williams ended his night with 21 points and a trio of rebounds for the Jazz, who went 36-30 last season and lost in the first round to the San Antonio Spurs.
"They have been super all training camp and it's going to transfer all season long," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said of Mo and Marvin Williams. "These guys are very proud guys, they are true professionals. They take it personal and they go out there and make sure they try and get stops on the defensive end and let the offense generate from there."
Paul Millsap netted 13 points and ripped down 15 rebounds, and Al Jefferson contributed a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Randy Foye had 13 points and Gordon Heyward donated 11 points.
Darren Collison led the Mavericks with 17 points and seven assists, while Brandan Wright added 15 points in the setback.
Vince Carter and O.J. Mayo scored 12 points apiece for the Mavs, who opened their 2012-13 campaign with a 99-91 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
Dallas raced out to a 15-8 advantage with just over four minutes gone in the game, but the Jazz answered with a 10-3 spurt to tie the game at 18-18.
It remained a one-possession game for the remainder of the first quarter and the Mavs held a 26-25 lead after the opening 12 minutes of play.
The second frame was just as tight, featuring eight lead changes and four ties. Each side led by as many as eight, but it was the Mavs who closed the opening half with an 11-3 burst to take a 63-55 lead into the locker room.
Utah roared back to take control of the game with a dominant third quarter.
Trailing, 67-61, with 9:14 to play in the third period, the Jazz reeled off an 11-3 run to take a 72-70 lead, capped by a pair of Jefferson free throws with 5:11 left in the frame.
Wright put home a layup to tie things at 72-72, but the Jazz closed out the quarter with a 20-4 burst, building the lead to a comfortable 92-76 margin heading into fourth.
"When you get beat by 24 in a quarter, that is a convincing beating," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "We just didn't match their aggression in the third and that was the difference in the game."
The Jazz coasted through the fourth stanza, topping off their lead at 20 en route to the win.
