Magic play host to Suns

Nov 4, 2012 - 3:45 PM (Sports Network) - The Orlando Magic were able to turn the page on the Dwight Howard era with a season-opening win and will shoot for a 2-0 start tonight versus the Phoenix Suns at Amway Center.

Glen Davis has become the "new" face in the paint and led the Magic with 29 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's 102-89 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Sharpshooter J.J. Redick netted 21 points for the Magic, who haven't started 2-0 since winning three straight to begin the 2009-10 campaign.

"It's a good feeling just to win and play well together," Redick said. "I think that was the biggest thing that we played together. We're all on the same page, doing the same thing, no other agendas. That's a really good feeling."

The Magic, though, lost forward Hedo Turkoglu with a broken left hand and he is out indefinitely. Rookies Maurice Harkless and DeQuan Jones could fill the void at forward while Turkoglu recovers from surgery.

Orlando also won in the debut of head coach Jacque Vaughn and shot 48.8 percent from the floor. Vaughn's squad also held the Nuggets to 38.1 percent shooting, and he was given the game ball to commemorate his first regular- season NBA victory.

The Magic went 21-12 last season at home and hope to make it back-to-back wins in front of the home crowd. They will hit the road for two straight games against Chicago and Minnesota on Tuesday.

"There's been a lot of change around here, and the expectations haven't been too high for us to get off to this type of start," said guard Arron Afflalo, who came from Denver in the Howard deal.

Phoenix is 1-1 on the young season and rebounded from a season-opening loss versus Golden State with a 92-89 triumph over Detroit on Friday. Double-double machine Marcin Gortat posted 16 points and 16 rebounds, while newcomer Michael Beasley had 16 points and seven rebounds.

Goran Dragic added 15 points and 10 assists for the Suns.

"Offensively we're still a work in progress," said Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry. "We were able to create a lot of open looks, but we have to do a better job of connecting with the shots and getting better penetration."

The Suns are playing their first road game of the season Sunday and also will visit Miami and Charlotte on the trek. They are trying to win two in a row following a season-opening loss since 2005-06.

Phoenix has won six of its last eight road openers.

Orlando defeated the Suns, 103-93, in the only meeting between the teams a season ago on March 21. The Magic have won three straight and five of the previous six meetings with Phoenix, losers in four straight at the Magic.
