Suns use late rally to top Cavs

Nov 10, 2012 - 5:44 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Goran Dragic scored a game-high 26 points and Shannon Brown added 22 points off the bench as the Phoenix Suns edged the Cleveland Cavaliers, 107-105, on Friday.

The Suns trailed by seven with 4:35 left, but used a 14-4 run to take a 105-102 lead with 37.4 seconds remaining.

Kyrie Irving's layup was blocked by Marcin Gortat and Cleveland was forced to foul Dragic, who made 1-of-2 free throws.

Daniel Gibson buried a 3-pointer with 13.1 seconds left and the Cavs quickly fouled Sebastian Telfair, who split a pair of free throws.

Cleveland turned to Irving for a game-winning shot, but the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year's three was off target and the Suns held on for the win.

"I mean obviously it was a much needed win. I just thought our guys hung in there. They're a really good team. That young backcourt, like I said earlier, I think they are as good as any backcourt in the NBA. You see what (Dion) Waiters can do and the way Kyrie (Irving) controls the game," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. "Just the way he controls the game makes it really, really tough. They have a great backcourt but we just started the game off and we were so bad early as far as turning the ball over."

Rookie Dion Waiters paced the Cavs with 23 points and Irving added 17 points and eight assists. C.J. Miles added 19 points off the bench in the setback.

"The story doesn't change, it's on the defensive end; twelve good minutes. It's as simple as that," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "Obviously we have to get more out of our bench then what we're getting these first six games."

Cleveland raced out to a 37-16 lead after the first quarter. The Cavs shot 63.6 percent from the floor in the period and caused eight turnovers.

The Suns were able to cut it to 62-49 entering the break after outscoring the Cavs 33-25 in the period. Phoenix connected on 4-of-5 3-pointers in the frame and were led by Telfair, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the quarter.

Phoenix continued to chip away at the lead and pulled within seven points at 83-76 at the end of the third quarter.

The Suns' comeback was the third-largest in team history ... Phoenix has trailed by double-digits in all three home games this season ... The Cavs have dropped four of their last five to the Suns ... Phoenix has won two straight ... Cleveland has lost three of four in a six-game road trip.
