Turner helps Sixers take down Cavs

Nov 19, 2012 - 5:02 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Evan Turner had 19 points, nine assists and six rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to an 86-79 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Wells Fargo Center.

Spencer Hawes gave 14 points and nine rebounds, while Jrue Holiday also contributed 14 points with nine assists for the Sixers, who have won two straight.

Alonzo Gee finished with 17 points to pace Cleveland, which dropped its sixth consecutive game.

Tristan Thompson and Anderson Varejao each recorded a double-double in defeat as Thompson had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Varejao also netted 14 points to go along with 15 boards.

"We had some good looks at the offensive end," Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott said. "I thought we got a little stagnant towards the end. That probably had a little to do with fatigue."

The Cavaliers entered the second quarter holding a 21-19 lead after a back- and-forth first quarter that saw three lead changes and three ties, but after C.J. Miles opened the second with a 3-pointer, Philadelphia answered with six straight points to take a 25-24 advantage.

Omri Casspi put an end to the run with a shot from beyond the arc on the other end and the teams traded baskets over the final nine minutes of the half until a pair of Hawes free throws gave the Sixers a 43-42 edge at the break.

The teams continued to trade blows in a third quarter which included three lead changes and two ties until Holiday sparked a late 6-2 spurt with a jumper to give Philadelphia a 62-57 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Sixers then carried that momentum into the fourth, opening the frame with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to a game-high 10 points, 69-59.

Cleveland would battle back to close its gap to 75-73 with just under four minutes remaining, but the Cavaliers would get no closer as Philadelphia answered with a 9-2 push Turner capped with a turnaround jumper for an 84-75 cushion with less than two minutes left in the game.

The Cavaliers trailed by at least seven points the rest of the way.

"I was very proud of our guys. I'm hoping it gets smoother," Sixers coach Doug Collins said. "Every game is a grind. We're just not in a great rhythm offensively."

Philadelphia has won six straight games over Cleveland ... Cleveland was held to just 35.7 percent shooting, but outscored Philadelphia in the paint, 44-24 ...
