Curry leads Warriors over Clippers
Jan 22, 2013 - 3:50 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Stephen Curry netted a game-high 28 points on 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc as the Golden State Warriors posted a 106-99 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.Klay Thompson and Jarrett Jack each registered 18 points, while Jack added 10 assists for the Warriors, who have won two straight games following a season- high three-game losing streak. David Lee supplied 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
"This is a good sign for us," Curry said. "We have to keep fighting through this tough stretch of January. We've been playing pretty well."
Blake Griffin scored 26 points, pulled down 13 boards and dished out eight assists for the Clippers, who had won four in a row. Jamal Crawford scored 24 points and Caron Butler totaled 19 in the loss.
Golden State controlled the tempo of the contest in the third quarter, even answering twice when the Clippers tied things up, once at 55-55 with a Thompson 3-pointer and another time at 60-60 with a Lee alley oop from Curry. But after Thompson's trey with 3:42 remaining in the frame gave the Warriors a 73-68 cushion, things quickly changed.
The Clippers ended the quarter with a bang and took a 80-73 lead into the fourth thanks to a 12-0 run, capped off by Butler's step-back jumper with 38 seconds left.
Curry, who started the final stanza shooting 3-of-3 from behind the arc, registered his fifth assist of the game -- and the prettiest -- as he grabbed a rebound, and threaded the needle with a one-handed bounce pass to Jack, who capped off the play with a beautiful reverse layup which gave the Warriors a 90-86 edge with 6:00 remaining.
Griffin then took the momentum out of the crowd with back-to-back buckets and an assist to Crawford, who hit a trey from the right side of the floor to give Los Angeles a 93-90 lead with just over four minutes left.
As the game winded down into the final minutes, and after a Carl Landry lay-in gave the home team a 96-95 edge, Curry hit his fourth 3-pointer of the quarter with 1:26 left, giving his team a four-point lead.
The Clippers managed just four points in the final 3:40 and a Lee putback and five made free throws, closed the game out for Golden State.
"It was tough. We used a lot of energy to get back," Crawford said.
As expected, the action was close early on, and both teams ended the first quarter shooting an identical, 13-of-18 from the floor. The game was tied, 33-33.
Golden State extended its lead to as many as 11 in the second quarter, as Curry nailed a 3-pointer with 4:40 left before the break to make it 50-39 in favor of the home team.
The Clippers, however, responded with a 13-3 run to end the quarter and limited the Warriors to just two points during the stretch, until Thompson connected on one free throw thanks to a Jordan technical with four seconds left before the break. Golden State led, 53-52.
Both teams had six treys in the first half, while Golden State shot 54.1 percent from the floor, compared to 51.4 percent for Los Angeles.
