Grizzlies give Prince happy homecoming in Detroit

Feb 20, 2013 - 5:56 AM Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Mike Conley scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Zach Randolph registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as the Memphis Grizzlies used a critical second-quarter surge before cruising to a 105-91 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Ed Davis had 14 points and Tony Allen and Quincy Pondexter each netted 10 for the Grizzlies, who have won four straight and five of their last seven contests overall.

Former Pistons Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye, the two players the Grizzlies acquired in the three-team trade with Toronto, finished with four and six points, respectively. Prince, playing agaisnt his former team for the first time, was part of the Pistons' championship squad in 2003-04 and played 10-plus seasons in Detroit.

"I had put closure to it after the first game," Prince said. "When I realized 'Man, I'm in another uniform.' After I got more comfortable in the second and third game, that was closure to me. These guys, what they did for me and my family, I don't hold any grudges whatsoever. It was a great time. You never want to end on a bad note. Nobody wants to do that. It was definitely unfortunate but I love all those guys. I have great relationships with everybody. It's a situation where it was time for me to start a new chapter."

Brandon Knight scored 13 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost two of their last three games. Jonas Jerebko came in late to donate 13 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the floor in the defeat, with Jose Calderon scoring 10 points and dishing out seven assists for Detroit.

Kyle Singler's running jumper four minutes into the second quarter made it 39-30 in favor of the Pistons, but Memphis quickly caught fire. Jerryd Bayless started a 23-3 flurry, and fittingly capped it off with a slam with 35 seconds remaining, to make it 53-42 at the break.

Detroit failed to score a basket in the final 4:12 of the first half, while the Grizzlies shook off the slow start to oustscore the home team 31-12 in the second session.

The visitors rode their momentum into the second half, as Conley extended the advantage to 18 points four minutes into the third quarter. The left-hander only missed one field goal in the quarter and finished with 13 points. Twice Conley extended the lead to 25 points -- each time with a triple -- before the Grizzlies closed the third stanza convincingly up, 84-60.

"Coming into the game, we knew we would have to make the right decisions and make crisp passes." Detroit center Greg Monroe said. "In the first quarter, we were making the right plays and making sure they didn't get out on the break and make easy buckets. We lost that focus in the second quarter."

The Pistons trailed by 20 points or more for the majority of the fourth before Jerebko and other reserves made the contest more manageable in the final minutes of play.

It was the Pistons who came out looking to make a statement, as the team took a 30-22 lead after one quarter behind Knight's 10 points and 4-of-5 shooting effort.
