Gasol, Randolph pace red-hot Grizzlies past Mavs

Feb 28, 2013 - 6:24 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Marc Gasol had 21 points, 12 rebounds and five assists to help the Memphis Grizzlies to a 90-84 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

Zach Randolph scored 22 points and pulled down 10 boards and Quincy Pondexter donated 12 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, who trailed by as many as 25 points, matching the largest comeback in franchise history (Portland, March 25, 2002).

Shawn Marion scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Elton Brand added 12 points off the bench for the Mavs, losers in three straight.

"It's another tough lesson in a season full of tough lessons," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said.

Dallas shot a blistering 75 percent (15-for-20) in the first quarter to race out to a 38-19 lead after the first 12 minutes.

The Mavs' lead ballooned to 25 points in the second quarter following Marion's jumper with just under 5 1/2 minutes left.

"I don't know what their mindset was coming in, but it wasn't about going out and being professional and doing what they were supposed to do and playing the way they are capable of playing," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said of the slow start "I had to sub early. I took everybody out for a second. Guys were pissed at me, but I was pissed at them so it didn't matter."

Memphis closed the half on a 16-4 run to go into the break trailing 55-42.

The Grizzlies scored the first 20 points of the third quarter to run to go up 62-55 and never looked back. Randolph poured in 10 points on the run including a deep jumper from the left wing near the midway point of the frame that seemed to shift all momentum to Memphis.

Memphis really clamped down defensively in the third, holding Dallas to just five points on 2-of-17 shooting and took a 66-60 lead into the final frame.

Brand's jumper with 2:50 left pulled the visitors within two points, 80-78, but the Grizzlies responded with a 9-4 run to go up 89-82 with 39.6 seconds left and Dallas couldn't get closer than five the rest of the way.
