Grizzles, Clippers meet in critical Western clash
Mar 13, 2013 - 3:09 PM (Sports Network) - The Memphis Grizzlies look to keep rolling when they resume a four-game road trip Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies have won five in a row and 13 of their last 14 games, and opened the trip with Tuesday's 102-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Zach Randolph had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Marc Gasol scored a team-high 20 points for Memphis, which is a franchise-best 24 games above .500 (43-19).
Mike Conley had 14 points and a career-high 15 assists in the win. He recorded 12 points and four assists in the fourth quarter.
"It was a nice win against a very tough ballclub that wouldn't quit," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said.
The Grizzlies are third in the Western Conference and first in defense, allowing 89.5 points per game. They are 20-0 when scoring 100-plus points on offense.
Memphis is 18-11 on the road and has won three straight as the guest. It is one road win shy of matching a team record set in the 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06 campaigns. Denver and Utah remain on the current trek.
Memphis is just a half-game ahead of the Clippers for third in the West.
Los Angeles will resume a three-game homestand Wednesday and has alternated wins and losses over the past five games.
In a 129-97 blowout of the Detroit Pistons on Sunday in the opener of the residency, Blake Griffin scored 22 points and Chris Paul recorded 20 points and 14 assists to lead the way.
Matt Barnes scored 16 points and Caron Butler added 15 for the Clippers, who are 10-3 in the past 13 games and fourth in the West standings.
"When we play the right way, we're tough to beat," said Paul.
The Clippers are 25-7 at home this season and will close out the homestand versus the New York Knicks on Sunday.
In injury news for L.A., guard Eric Bledsoe (calf) is doubtful versus the Grizzlies and guard Jamal Crawford (ankle) is probable. Butler is expected to miss at least a week with a strained left elbow.
Los Angeles has taken both meetings with Memphis this season and six of the past seven matchups overall. The Grizzlies have lost four in a row and 10 of the previous 12 games at the Clippers.
