Jazz seek first win of the season, visit Brooklyn

Nov 5, 2013 - 3:28 PM (Sports Network) - The Utah Jazz are off to their worst start since re- locating from New Orleans and they'll try to get off the schneid Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center.

The Jazz are starting a four-game road trip against Brooklyn, Boston, Chicago and Toronto and are 0-3 for the first time since 1979-80 under head coach Tom Nissalke, whose squad began the year 0-4 in the first season at Utah. Adrian Dantley was the star of the team, which just moved from the Crescent City.

Utah lost its season opener to Oklahoma City, dropped Friday's tilt at Phoenix and is coming off Saturday's 104-93 loss versus Houston. A strong second half by the Rockets in the opener of a three-game road trip propelled them to victory and Chandler Parsons scored a team-best 24 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. James Harden had 23 points and Dwight Howard chipped in 15 and nine boards.

The Rockets trailed by as many as 19 late in the second quarter, but shot 58 percent (21-of-36) from the field in the second half. They had a 64-37 advantage over the last two quarters. In the second half, the Jazz, who had a 56-40 lead after 24 minutes, shot 32 percent from the field and recorded just one assist.

Richard Jefferson scored 18 points for the Jazz, while Enes Kanter had 16 points and both Gordon Hayward and Alec Burks ended with 15 points. Derrick Favors scored 12 points in the loss.

"There's nothing you can say, there's no play you can draw up," Jefferson said of Utah's early struggles. "You just needs guys to go do it. That's the growing pains of a young team."

In injury news for the Jazz, center Andris Biedrins (ankle) and forward Jeremy Evans (shoulder) are doubtful Tuesday.

Brooklyn failed to build on Friday's big win over the two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat, suffering a 107-86 loss at Orlando on Sunday. Things were tight for the first two quarters, then the Magic outscored Brooklyn 66-48 in the final two stanzas.

Brook Lopez and Paul Pierce scored 21 and 16 points, respectively, and Deron Williams tallied nine points and seven assists. Brooklyn made 38.2 percent of their shots and sank just 4-of-17 3-pointers. Orlando used a 17-4 run in the third quarter and stopped a four-game losing streak to the Nets, who swept the Magic last season by winning the four games by an average of 19.8 points.

"The win against Miami doesn't mean a thing when you come here and lay an egg, which is what we did," Williams said. "We knew they were a young team and were going to play hard. We had to be ready to match their intensity and we weren't. They looked like they wanted it more and that is unacceptable."

Jason Kidd made his coaching debut for Brooklyn after he was suspended for the first two games of the season following a DUI incident in the offseason.

After the Nets host the Jazz, they will play four of five road games.

Lopez is probable Tuesday because of a sprained right ankle.

Brooklyn lost both contests against Utah last season and is winless in the past four meetings between the squads. The Jazz have won nine of 12 against the Nets, but are 4-6 in the last 10 as the guest in this series.
