Hawks resume western jaunt against Kings

Nov 5, 2013 - 3:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Atlanta Hawks continue their western trip Tuesday night with a stop in Sleep Train Arena to take on the Sacramento Kings.

The Hawks suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday night when Pau Gasol buried two free-throws with six seconds left to upend the Hawks, 105-103. Atlanta nearly overcame a 21-point deficit, but Kyle Korver's 3-pointer for the win was blocked.

"We felt like if we could tie the game and get it to overtime, we'd be in a good position," said head coach Mike Budenholzer. "You have choices. Kyle, in that situation, I'll take him any day of the week."

Korver was spectacular at Staples Center with a game-high 22 points. He went 6-for-6 from long range and has made a 3-pointer in 76 consecutive games, which is 13 off Dana Barros' record.

Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague both netted 14 points, followed by 13 from Mike Scott off the bench. Al Horford only scored 12 points, but pulled down 16 rebounds and one of Atlanta's first-round picks, Dennis Schroeder, chipped in 10.

The Hawks still have to visit Denver on Wednesday before this early-season trip comes to an end.

The Kings have dropped two straight to the Pacific Division's powerhouses after taking their home-opener against the Nuggets.

Sacramento lost at home to the Los Angeles Clippers 110-101 on Friday, then fell 98-87 to the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena on Saturday night.

Against the Warriors, the Kings fell behind by 20 at the half, but clawed back and won the second half, where all of Golden State's starters didn't play significant minutes, by nine.

"I thought our energy, the fact that we were not ready to play, is what set the tone all night," Kings head coach Michael Malone said.

The silver lining in the Warriors loss was the sold performance of Ben McLemore, the team's first-round pick this past summer. He shot 8-for-17 en route to a team-high 19 points.

Travis Outlaw chipped in 15 points, followed by 12 from Jason Thompson and 10 from Isaiah Thomas. Outlaw and Thompson both posted double-figure rebound games.

The starters were held to a combined 22 points versus Golden State. DeMarcus Cousins, who is averaging 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds in the early going, was held to eight points and seven boards.

The Hawks have won 10 straight against the Kings, including five in a row in Sacramento.
