Jazz still searching for first win, host Denver

Nov 11, 2013 - 3:31 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of disappointing teams collide Monday night in Salt Lake City, where the winless Utah Jazz play host to the Denver Nuggets.

The Jazz are 0-7 to start the season, their worst opening since dropping the first 11 games of their inaugural 1974-75 campaign in New Orleans.

Utah lost all four games on its recent road trip and suffered a 115-91 setback at Toronto on Saturday. Gordon Hayward paced Utah with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Derrick Favors registered 17 points and seven boards for the Jazz, who will play three in a row at home versus Denver, New Orleans and San Antonio.

"I've got to remember that these guys are young," Utah head coach Tyrone Corbin said. "You have to keep telling them that no one is going to feel sorry for you in the this league. You have to keep working hard."

The Jazz, who had won seven in a row at Air Canada Centre, are 0-2 at home this season and have yet to break the 100-point mark in scoring.

Denver fell back into the loss column with Friday's 114-103 setback to the Phoenix Suns in the opener of a two-game trek.

Ty Lawson netted a season-best 29 points to lead Denver, which fell to 1-4 on the campaign and was coming off a win versus Atlanta. Jordan Hamilton tallied a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds, while Anthony Randolph scored 14 points off the bench in defeat.

The Nuggets appeared to be on the road to victory and went on an extended 25-4 burst in the third quarter to give them an 84-74 advantage with two minutes to go in the period. Denver took an 87-84 margin into the final frame, but the Suns rallied to stay hot on the young season.

"The third quarter when we went up 10, I should have managed the game better. We took a lot of quick shots and turned the ball over at the end of the quarter. That's the time you've got to manage the game, going into the fourth quarter and up by 10 or at least around there," Lawson said.

Lawson is averaging 22.6 points and 6.8 assists and has scored 20-plus points in five straight games.

Denver won three of four meetings with Utah last season, but has lost four of six games in Salt Lake City.
