Spurs try to extend win streak versus Cavs

Nov 23, 2013 - 3:42 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The surging San Antonio Spurs are back in the Alamo City and will put their nine-game winning streak on the line Saturday versus the Cleveland Cavaliers at the AT&T Center.

The Spurs made it nine straight wins with Friday's 102-86 drubbing of the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum. Tony Parker scored 20 points, Tiago Splitter added 17 and Manu Ginobili netted 15 points for San Antonio, which shot 53.2 percent. Parker scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

San Antonio survived a furious rally by the Grizzlies for its fifth straight win on the road.

"They made a run like we expected them to. This is the NBA. That's how it works," said Spurs power forward Tim Duncan. "We kept our composure and made some plays at the right time."

Duncan ended with eight points and six assists, while Kawhi Leonard had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Spurs. The Spurs are 11-1, tying the team record for their best start through 12 games. They were 11-1 in 2010-11.

The Spurs will also entertain New Orleans on this quick homestand and are 5-0 as the host this season.

Cleveland just lost to the Pelicans, dropping Friday's 104-100 decision in the Big Easy. Kyrie Irving and Jarrett Jack scored 22 and 19 points, respectively, and Dion Waiters added 14 for the Cavs, losers in five of six games.

The Cavs shot a decent 53.2 percent, but were outscored by a 34-29 difference in the decisive fourth quarter. New Orleans erased a 93-81 deficit and was led by 19 points from both Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans.

"We had a chance in the fourth quarter. We gave ourselves a chance," Irving told NBA.com. "There's a couple things we've got to get better at."

Cavs head coach Mike Brown said it was a learning experience for a young team. Now they'll face one of the more veteran and cohesive bunches in the Spurs.

Guard C.J. Miles (calf) and center Tyler Zeller (ankle) both missed Friday's game and are questionable against San Antonio.

Cleveland lost both meetings with the Spurs last season and has fallen short in each of the last seven games in this series. The Cavs are winless in four straight and 20 of their last 23 trips to the Alamo City.
