Spurs seek 11 straight with New Orleans in town

Nov 25, 2013 - 3:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Antonio Spurs aren't the only squad riding a 10- game winning streak, but they do have the best winning percentage (.923) in the Western Conference.

They will put that to the test Monday night when they host the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers have ripped off 10 wins in a row and the latter is 12-2 on the season. San Antonio is off to a 12-1 start and recorded a 126-96 bashing of Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday at the AT&T Center. The 12-1 start matches the 2010-11 season, when the Spurs won 13 of their first 14 contests.

Danny Green scored a team-high 17 points and Patty Mills netted 15 off the bench for the Spurs, who shot a sizzling 57.5 percent and drained a season- high 16 shots from 3-point range (16-of-24). Marco Belinelli scored 10 points as a reserve and six bench players had at least eight points.

"It's always good to get the bench minutes so the guys feel comfortable," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Especially the guys who haven't been here before, so they can understand the system better. They can feel a part of things and obviously give some of the other guys a rest. Especially in a back- to-back situation."

Green was 5-of-7 from downtown, while Tony Parker scored 12 points and Tim Duncan added nine and six rebounds. San Antonio, which led by as many as 25 in the first half, was coming off an impressive win at Memphis on Friday and pushed its home record to 6-0 this season.

Spurs reserve forward Boris Diaw was a late scratch Saturday with a bruised right ribcage suffered against the Grizzlies and is questionable Monday.

After hosting the Pelicans in the Alamo City, San Antonio will hit the road to Oklahoma City and Orlando.

New Orleans had the weekend to rest and won its third straight game with a 104-100 decision over the Cavaliers in the finale of a three-game homestand.

The Pelicans rallied from a halftime deficit and outscored the Cavs, 34-29, in the fourth quarter to stay on the winning path. They erased a 12-point hole (93-81) in the final stanza and scored 23 points with less than five minutes to go.

Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans were two of six players to score in double digits and finished with 19 points apiece, while Anthony Davis added 17 and 13 rebounds and Jrue Holiday ended with 15 points and 11 assists.

Ryan Anderson and Jason Smith chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Pelicans, who scored 21 points on 20 Cleveland turnovers

"This was a big win for us, because we showed we can win at the end when we are down and have to claw and fight our way back," Anderson said. "It's something we didn't really show at the beginning of the season, but we did it tonight."

Monty Williams collected his 100th victory as Pelicans head coach.

New Orleans previously won four in a row from last Jan. 5-11 and looks to halt a three-game road losing streak to the Spurs. San Antonio took three of four meetings with New Orleans last season and has won 14 of the past 17 matchups between the teams.

The Pelicans have dropped five in a row and 19 of 23 games at the Spurs.
