Lakers rally to beat Pistons
Nov 30, 2013 - 7:32 AM Auburn Hills, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Wesley Johnson had 27 points and six rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Detroit Pistons, 106-102, on Friday night.Lakers erased an eight-point gap in the final 4:22.
Brandon Jennings' reverse layup staked Detroit a 99-91 before the Lakers ripped off 12 straight. Jordan Farmar had seven points during the surge and Nick Young's driving layup made it 103-99 with 1:05 to go.
Jennings nailed a jumper at the other end and Pau Gasol split a pair of foul shots with 33 ticks remaining, which made it 104-101. Jennings was fouled on a 3-point attempt from the left wing with 16.7 seconds on the clock, but missed the first two foul shots. He drained the last one to make it a two-point game.
Farmar missed two critical free throws at the other end. Josh Smith, though, was whistled for an offensive foul with 2.7 seconds. He drove in from the top of the key, but Young stepped in and drew the charge.
Young then made two foul shots to seal the outcome.
Shawne Williams tallied 20 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Los Angeles, which was outscored in the paint, 76-28, but knocked down 14-of-31 from beyond the arc.
"I think we rope-a-doped today. They got so tired of beating us up in there, they got tired," Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni said of the points in the paint discrepancy.
Rodney Stuckey had 22 points, while Smith pulled down 19 boards for Detroit, which has dropped four of its last six tilts.
The Pistons didn't record a basket outside the paint until midway through the third quarter.
"At some point we've got to make shots," Pistons head coach Maurice Cheeks said.
Detroit led 32-31 after a quarter of play, but the Lakers led 56-55 edge at the break.
The Pistons took an 87-77 cushion into the fourth after outscoring the Lakers 32-21 in the third.
Game Notes
The Lakers have won five of their last six games ... Detroit outrebounded Los Angeles, 55-44 ... Detroit was 1-of-8 from beyond the arc and 13-of-25 from the foul line.
