Randy Foye scored 17 points and J.J. Hickson poured in 13 points to go with 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have won five straight.
Nate Robinson added 16 points off the bench in the win.
Carmelo Anthony, who spent his first 7 1/2 seasons with Denver, scored a game- high 27 points and pulled down seven rebounds against his former club. Andrea Bargnani added 22 points, while Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith finished with 11 points apiece for the Knicks, who have lost eight straight to fall to a woeful 3-12.
Robinson's layup put the Nuggets up 77-67 early in the fourth quarter, but an 11-4 New York burst pulled the Knicks within three points.
Later in the fourth, Foye nailed a 3-ball with 1:43 left to make it 94-85 in Denver's favor. Smith then knocked down a triple from the left wing to cut the deficit to six, but Hickson split a pair of free throws to push the lead to 95-88.
After the teams traded free throws, the Knicks' Raymond Felton drained a three from the left corner to again make it a 3-point game. After Chandler was whistled for an offensive foul, Shumpert recovered a loose ball and took it straight to the basket to bring New York within 96-95.
Lawson split a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left and the Knicks turned to Anthony, who missed a turnaround jumper as time expired.
Denver led 30-20 after one quarter and took a 51-45 advantage at the half. The Nuggets' lead swelled to double digits in the third, but Anthony's 3-point play late in the frame brought New York within 75-67 entering the final frame.
Game Notes
Wilson Chandler, who was sent to Denver in the Anthony trade, finished with 13 points for the Nuggets ... Denver had just five offensive rebounds ... Knicks forward Metta World Peace played just 4 1/2 minutes and went 0-for-2 from the floor.
