Warriors try to close trip with win in Sacramento
Dec 1, 2013 - 2:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors try to close out their four- game road trip on a high note when they visit the Sacramento Kings Sunday. After opening the journey with a win at New Orleans, the Warriors have dropped consecutive games to Dallas and Oklahoma City. Friday's 113-112 overtime loss to the Thunder was a tough one, as Russell Westbrook buried the go-ahead 3- pointer with 0.1 seconds to go in the extra session.
Westbrook scored a season-high 34 points on 10-of-25 shooting.
"Russell wanted the ball more than anyone else on the floor tonight. He had great will, made a big play and we didn't go get the basketball. It's tough, it's very tough," Warriors head coach Mark Jackson said.
Oklahoma City has won six straight since Andre Iguodala's fadeaway jumper at the buzzer lifted Golden State past the Thunder, 116-115, on Nov. 14.
Steph Curry finished with 33 points, 11 rebounds (career-high-tying) and five assists in the recent loss, while Harrison Barnes tied career-highs in points (26) and field goals made (10) on 15 attempts.
Golden State has lost two in a row and five if six games since a four-game winning streak and will host Toronto in Oakland on Tuesday. The Warriors, who have a 4-6 record as the visitor, are the only team in the NBA with three players averaging at least 17 ppg (Klay Thompson, Curry, David Lee).
The Kings have lost three in a row, including consecutive defeats at the hands of both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers. In Friday's 104-98 overtime loss to the Chris Paul-less Clippers, DeMarcus Cousins tallied 25 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Sacramento.
Ben McLemore and John Salmons scored 14 points apiece, while Derrick Williams netted 12 in his Kings' debut. Williams was acquired from Minnesota on Nov. 26 in exchange for Luc Mbah a Moute. With Paul out, the Kings couldn't stop Jamal Crawford, who paced the Clips with 31 points and 11 assists off the bench. The Kings erased a 94-89 deficit with 1:51 left to force overtime, but L.A. used a 10-0 run in the extra period to claim victory.
Crawford had four points in the decisive run.
"With Chris Paul out, I knew it was going to be (Crawford's) green light to take over the game," Kings coach Mike Malone said. "He's a beast. He's done that his whole career."
Isaiah Thomas scored five points in the loss and has registered a total of 14 points in the last two games after averaging 19.3 ppg in the previous six.
Malone's squad is playing the second of four straight in California's capital on Sunday and is in the midst of playing six of seven games at Sleep Train Arena. Sacramento is 3-6 as the host this season and has to play better on defense, as opponents have scored 100-plus points in the last five (103.4).
In the previous four games, the Kings held opposing teams to 94.0 ppg.
The Kings suffered a 98-87 loss at Golden State on Nov. 2. Golden State has lost two straight and four of its last five games in Sacramento.
