Final
Jazz top Magic behind strong outing from Burke
Dec 19, 2013 - 5:22 AM Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Rookie Trey Burke filled the stat sheet with 30 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz past the Orlando Magic, 86-82, at Amway Center.Burke played 40-plus minutes and only committed two turnovers for a Jazz team that had 16 overall. Gordon Hayward chipped in with 15 points, including the game-sealing free throws after Jameer Nelson missed a runner in the lane over Derrick Favors, who totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
Utah improved to 1-1 on its five-game road trip, while the Magic fell for the third time in their last four games.
Tobias Harris and Nikola Vucevic each had double-doubles for Orlando, which received a team-high 17 points from Nelson.
Burke's pull-up jumper broke a 78-78 tie with 3:45 remaining, and Favors tipped in his own miss the next time down for a four-point Jazz lead.
A pair of free throws from Vucevic and Glen Davis around a Hayward 20-footer had Orlando down by two, 84-82, and a shot clock violation on Utah gave the Magic a chance to tie or take the lead with one final possession.
Nelson drove past Burke and had a clean look in the lane before Favors contested the shot and forced Nelson to go too high off the backboard.
"I just wanted to contest the shot and make him kind of arch it a little and he missed it," Favors said.
Marvin Williams grabbed a clutch rebound, and Hayward sank two free throws with 1.6 seconds left to secure Utah's sixth straight victory over the Magic.
Orlando went the final 4:47 of the first half without making a field goal, and a personal 10-0 run by Burke helped the Jazz take a 49-39 lead into the break.
Burke hit a layup in the closing seconds on the third quarter to give Utah a 68-62 advantage, but the Magic opened the fourth on a 14-1 flurry.
E'Twaun Moore hit a pair of 3-pointers during the surge and added a jumper for a 76-69 Orlando cushion with 7:57 to play. Utah responded with the next nine points, though, retaking the lead on a deep make by Williams.
"If we had the type of effort from the second half in the first half, it would have been our game from the jump," Harris said.
