Raptors take down Mavericks in overtime
Dec 21, 2013 - 4:59 AMVideo
DeRozan finished with 15 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
Kyle Lowry scored a team-high 20 points, Jonas Valanciunas added 18 with 13 rebounds while Terrence Ross and Amir Johnson finished with 15 points apiece for the Raptors, who have won three of their last four.
Jose Calderon, who was traded from Toronto to Detroit last season, poured in a game-high 23 points against his former club. We was 8-for-13 from the field and a blistering 7-for-10 from beyond the arc. His seven 3's tied a career high.
Dirk Nowitzki added 22 points and Monta Ellis finished with 21 points and 11 assists for the Mavericks, who had won five of seven entering the contest.
The Raptors trailed 81-78 entering the fourth quarter, but Greivis Vasquez and DeRozan buried back-to-back triples to ignite an 11-0 run that put Toronto ahead 89-81 just 2:28 into the frame.
The Mavs rallied back and took the lead as Nowitzki canned a trey from the left wing, but John Salmons responded with his first bucket of the contest, a 3-pointer from the top of the key, to make it 96-95 in favor of the visitors.
After Nowtizki misfired from the wing, Salmons buried a jumper for a 98-95 lead.
Ellis' scooping layup preceded a Marion fastbreak slam that put the Mavs ahead 99-98 moments later. Johnson then split a pair of free throws with 51 seconds left to tie things up.
After Ellis was unable to get a tough jumper to fall, Calderon came up with the rebound and found Marion, who knocked down a floater from seven feet out with 20 seconds remaining.
DeRozan tied the game four seconds later, and Nowitzki and Wright missed shots in the closing seconds to force the extra session.
The teams traded baskets over the first 3 1/2 minutes until Calderon canned a trey for a 108-107 lead.
DeRozan, though, countered with his go-ahead jumper on the ensuing trip down the court and Toronto held Dallas scoreless the rest of the way.
"We were sleepwalking early. We kind of had an emotional drunk from our close loss the other night. I thought we were feeling sorry for ourselves a little bit. I had to get their attention and they did. Guys responded. They came out swinging, hit us with a haymaker, and I 'm proud of the way our guys fought back. That's what the NBA is all about," said Raptors coach Dwayne Casey.
The Mavs had a chance to win the game after Jae Crowder grabbed a rebound with 10 seconds left, but Ellis' jumper at the buzzer rimmed out.
"What happened at the end -- you know it's going to be one shot, one stop, and I think we did the right things, but we couldn't make the last shot. But it is what it is," said Calderon.
The Mavs raced out to a 33-22 lead after 12 minutes and took a 52-49 lead into the break. Dallas led 79-75 later in the third, but a Ross 3 made it a one- point game. Ellis, though, beat the buzzer for an 81-78 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.
