Favors' putback slam lifts Jazz over struggling Lakers

Dec 28, 2013 - 6:07 AM Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Derrick Favors' tip slam with 2.1 seconds remaining lifted the Utah Jazz to a 105-103 decision over the slumping Los Angeles Lakers from EnergySolutions Arena.

Gordon Hayward canned a 3 in transition to break a 99-99 tie before splitting a pair at the free throw line on the next Utah trip for a 103-99 edge with 1:05 remaining. Jordan Hill then scored four in a row for LA to knot the score.

On the decisive trip, Hayward drove right and missed a layup over Robert Sacre, but the Lakers failed to box out Favors, who crashed through the lane and converted the putback dunk. Jodie Meeks' last second 3-point try was nowhere close.

"The two big guys for the Lakers went over and altered his (Hayward) shot a little bit," said Favors. "It went off the rim and I Was just there for the offensive rebound."

Favors finished with 18 points and 14 boards for the Jazz while Hayward scored 24 points to go with a game-high nine assists. Marvin Williams scored 16 points and rookie Trey Burke donated 14 with seven helpers.

"The poise we showed down the stretch after we gave up a little lead, to fight back and make a big play by Derrick and Gordon to win the game shows growth," said Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin. "It's great to get a win while we're still learning."

Nick Young led six Lakers in double figures with 21 points off the bench before fouling out with 5:45 left in the fourth. Chris Kaman had 19 points and 10 boards while Hill and Jordan Farmar netted 16 points apiece in the setback.

"We just didn't play good," said Kaman. "We did some decent things, but in the second half we just couldn't get any stops."

Los Angeles has lost four in a row.

The Jazz led 25-23 after the first and 55-52 at the break. The opening half featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes.

Young helped the Lakers pull in front 74-72 after scoring seven points during a 9-0 LA surge midway through the third. Utah fought back to tie it and go back in front by two heading into the fourth after a pair of Alec Burks free throws in the final seconds of the frame.

Williams made 1-of-2 at the line after drawing Young's sixth foul for a 97-90 edge midway through the fourth. Meeks then capped a 9-2 Lakers run to tie it with 2:48 left, setting the stage for Utah's dramatic finish.
