Irving, Cavs down Jazz
Jan 11, 2014 - 6:48 AM Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyrie Irving had 25 points, eight assists, six rebounds and five steals as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Utah Jazz 113-102 on Friday night.Tristan Thompson tallied 18 points and 15 boards for Cleveland, which has won two in a row on the heels of a 1-8 stretch.
"He's got a great feel for the game. He hit a couple buckets and he just stayed aggressive," said Cavs coach Mike Brown. "I called a few plays and Jack called me off and sent the ball to Kyrie and it worked out great. Kyrie did a nice job of continuing to put pressure on Utah once he got rolling."
Luol Deng had 10 points in his Cleveland debut. The Cavs acquired the two-time All-Star Deng from the Chicago Bulls Tuesday in exchange for center Andrew Bynum, who was promptly waived, along with a first round pick and a pair of second rounders.
"He's a great player and a great person. He's not going to just come in and do anything out of the ordinary except play basketball and compete on both ends of the floor and that's all we need him to do," Irving said of Deng.
Trey Burke had 17 points and six assists for the Jazz, who had won three of their last four games coming in.
An Alec Burks 3-pointer pulled the Jazz within 72-68 late in the third, but Cleveland closed the frame on a 15-2 run.
Irving nailed a pair of triples and netted the first eight points of the surge and Jarrett Jack knocked down a 3 at the buzzer to give the Cavs an 85-70 cushion heading into the fourth, where they cruised to the easy win.
"Obviously, Kyrie Irving got going. His team feeds off of him, and once he hit a couple of 3s and got to the line, that's when they went on a run," Burke said.
The game was tied 26-26 after a quarter of play and Utah led 49-46 at the break.
