Wall leads Wizards over Bulls
Jan 18, 2014 - 5:16 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - John Wall scored a game-high 23 points and dished out 11 assists to lead the Washington Wizards to a 96-93 win over the Chicago Bulls on Friday.Bradley Beal and Martell Webster scored 14 points apiece and Marcin Gortat had 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks for the Wizards, winners in three straight.
Trevor Booker and Nene added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Washington, which also beat the Bulls in Chicago on Monday.
Kirk Hinrich paced the Bulls with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. D.J. Augustin provided 16 points off the bench, while Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson donated 12 points apiece for Chicago, which has dropped two of its last three.
Joakim Noah finished with nine points, 12 rebounds and six assists in the setback.
Washington trailed 70-62 with 5:18 left in the third period, but used a 10-0 run to take a 72-70 edge. Wall, who scored seven points in the flurry, highlighted the burst with a highlight-reel three-point play.
After stealing a Mike Dunleavy pass, Wall took the ball coast to coast before he was fouled hard by Dunleavy on the other end. As he went up for the layup, Dunleavy grabbed his arm and pulled him to the floor. Wall, however, flipped the ball up near the rim and got a friendly bounce off the backboard. He knocked down the free throw to make it a one possession game.
"I don't know how the heck it went in. I surprised myself," said Wall.
The teams went into the final frame tied at 74-74.
Chicago built a five-point lead just under two minutes into the final frame, but the Wizards fought back to tie it at 84-84 with 7:57 remaining.
The teams traded baskets from there, Ariza and Gortat scored on back-to-back possessions to put the hosts in front by five with 2:46 left.
Hinrich knocked down a jumper 25 ticks later, but both sides went scoreless the rest of the way. Chicago had one chance with 10.4 seconds left, but couldn't get a clean look and Butler's 3-pointer at the buzzer was blocked by Nene.
"We were going to try Mike. When he threw the ball to me, I was caught off guard by it. I think everybody was," Butler said.
Washington led 30-27 after the first quarter and took a 54-50 lead into the break.
