Millsap leads Hawks over Magic
Jan 23, 2014 - 5:04 AM Orlando, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Millsap scored 24 points to lead seven Atlanta Hawks in double figures en route to a 112-109 win over the Orlando Magic at Amway Center.Jeff Teague netted 23 points, DeMarre Carroll had 17, and Kyle Korver finished with 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds for the Hawks, who snapped a two-game losing skid to Orlando and evened the season series at 2-2 in the final game between the Southeast Division rivals.
Pero Antic added a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Shelvin Mack and Mike Scott each chipped in with 10 points in the win.
Victor Oladipo paced Orlando with 24 points and added seven rebounds and seven assists. Tobias Harris finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Jameer Nelson contributed 17 points and seven assists in Orlando's 12th loss in its last 13 games.
"It's tough, we had it won really," said Oladipo. "Overall I think we did a good job of just staying into the game."
Orlando came firing out of the gate in the fourth quarter by using an 18-4 run over the first 5:40 to take a 98-92 lead. Doron Lamb, who finished with a season-high 13 points, made three straight shots for the Magic during the stretch and Kyle O'Quinn tipped in a Moe Harkless miss to cap the run.
Millsap scored five straight for the Hawks later in the quarter to give the Hawks a 106-105 edge, but Oladipo and Nelson both answered with a bucket to put the Magic back in front with 48.8 seconds left.
Teague responded with two free throws and Antic kept the pendulum swinging on the next possession with a pair at the line for a 110-109 lead.
Glen Davis then missed a fadeaway jumper, Antic corralled another rebound and knocked down two at the line to extend the cushion with 11.1 seconds left.
Nelson's 3-pointer to tie the game as time expired was short and Atlanta held on for the win.
"Guys pulled together and said we're going to win this game," Teague said of how the team responded to Orlando's comeback. "We stuck together and got a big win."
Atlanta ended the final 1:40 of the first on a 7-1 sprint to take a 29-21 lead into the second quarter. The Hawks then stretched the lead in the second when Mack and Scott scored four points apiece during a 12-6 run that gave Atlanta a 50-39 advantage.
Davis then scored the final five points of a 10-2 spurt that pulled the Magic within three, 56-53, with under a minute remaining in the half.
Atlanta answered with four straight points, but Lou Williams fouled Nelson attempting a half-ending 3 with .7 seconds left. Nelson converted all three attempts and the Magic trailed 60-56 at the break.
Early in the third, Carroll and Teague buried two triples apiece during a 22-4 burst that gave the Hawks a commanding 82-63 lead. In all, Atlanta made five treys during the sequence with Korver adding the other.
Oladipo and Harkless hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the third and the Magic closed the gap to 88-80 heading to the fourth.
