Pacers, Hawks jump it up in Atlanta
Feb 4, 2014 - 2:29 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks have both won two straight, so something will have to give when the two teams meet Tuesday night at Philips Arena. The Pacers took the last two games of a three-game homestand after the Phoenix Suns handed them just their second home loss of the season. Indiana toppled the Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic.
Danny Granger scored a team-high 16 points to help the Pacers to a wire-to- wire 98-79 win over the Magic on Monday.
Paul George and Lance Stephenson both scored 15 points, with Stephenson adding 12 rebounds and five assists in Indiana's fourth consecutive win over Orlando.
"We definitely have a gear to push that lead when we want to," said Granger. "It's just a matter of fact of not relying on that when we get into these games. We have to execute offensively, our defense is always going to be there, it's just our offense that sometimes comes and goes."
C.J. Watson had 12 off the bench and Luis Scola chipped in 10 as Indiana's reserves outscored the Magic's, 49-19. The Pacers outrebounded Orlando, 52-38, and only committed nine turnovers.
The Hawks have also won two in a row. a road victory over the Philadelphia 76ers and a home decision against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Kyle Korver scored 24 points and Paul Millsap added 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Hawks to a 120-113 win over the Timberwolves and Kevin Love on Saturday.
DeMarre Carroll added 19, Jeff Teague scored 19 points and handed out eight assists and Mike Scott scored 14 points off the bench for the Hawks, winners of five of their last seven.
"Coach laid into us at halftime, he really did. I thought our guys responded," Korver said. "Hopefully he doesn't have to talk to us like that every time, all the time, but it worked tonight."
Atlanta was down six at the half, which might have prompted head coach Mike Budenholzer's rhetoric.
In the third quarter, the Hawks exploded for 38 points as Korver went 3- for-3 from 3-point land. He extended his NBA record streak of games with a made 3- pointer to 115.
The Hawks won this season's only matchup, a 10-point victory in Atlanta on Jan, 8. The Hawks have won 14 of the last 18 regular-season meetings. Indiana prevailed in six games during the playoffs last year, but has dropped 12 straight regular-season games in Atlanta, dating back to Dec. 22, 2006.
