T'Wolves aim to rebound versus Pistons
Mar 7, 2014 - 3:10 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Minnesota Timberwolves had a three-game winning streak snapped last time out, but they'll try and get back in the win column Friday night when they welcome the Detroit Pistons to the Target Center. The Wolves hadn't lost since a road setback in Portland on Feb. 23, but fell victim to the New York Knicks on Wednesday. The Knicks handed Minny a 118-106 loss in the first of a four-game homestand.
Kevin Love scored 19 points and Nikola Pekovic had 17 to lead Minnesota. Corey Brewer added 16, followed by 12 from Kevin Martin. Ricky Rubio was the fifth starter in double figures with 11 and Shabazz Muhammad chipped in 10 off the bench.
The Knicks began the game on a 9-0 run, then clung to an 88-86 lead entering the fourth quarter. New York started the final 12 minutes on a 15-2 run to pull away, led by Carmelo Anthony's six points.
"We came out flat, and in the fourth quarter we came out flat again," said Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea. "They did a great job. You gotta give them a lot of credit."
The T'Wolves will welcome the Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks on this residency.
The Pistons continue to be a disaster, losing five of their last six and eight of their last 10. Detroit has dropped seven straight on the road and will visit Boston on Sunday to close this short trip.
Last time out, the Pistons fell at The Palace of Auburn Hills to Central Division rival, the Chicago Bulls, 105-94.
Greg Monroe registered 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Pistons. Kyle Singler finished with 16 points, while Andre Drummond and Josh Smith both managed 15 points.
No other Pistons player reached double figures.
The Bulls took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, but opened a double- digit lead after starting the final frame on an 11-2 run. Chicago led by as many as 15 during the final quarter.
"We win the first and third quarters. We just gave up 34 points in the fourth. It's just not winning basketball," said Pistons interim head coach John Loyer.
Despite the losing ways of Detroit, the Pistons only trail the Atlanta Hawks by three games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Timberwolves have won seven consecutive games against the Pistons, including a 27-point drubbing in Detroit on Dec. 10. Minnesota has taken three straight as the host in this series.
