Walton, Lakers edge Suns in preseason duel

Oct 23, 2006 - 4:47 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Luke Walton's efforts in the closing moments were just enough.

Walton scored 19 points and Lamar Odom added 18 and nine rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers edged the Phoenix Suns, 94-91, in their second preseason matchup.

Andrew Bynum had 16 points and nine boards for the Lakers, who survived despite committing 30 turnovers.

Los Angeles held a 90-89 advantage before Walton drilled a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left. Following a basket by the Suns, Walton split a pair of free throws, making it 94-91 with just 9.5 seconds remaining.

After two 20-second timeouts, Jumaine Jones launched a 27-foot 3-pointer from the top of the key which bounced off the front of the rim before time expired.

First-round pick Jordan Farmar collected six assists and six rebounds, but shot just 1-of-7 from the floor for the Lakers, who sank 8-of-18 shots from the arc.

Leandro Barbosa scored 19 points and made five steals and Marcus Banks added 15 points for the Suns, who shot a dismal 4-of-23 from long distance.

Two-time reigning MVP Steve Nash finished with 10 points and 11 assists while Amare Stoudemire contributed only one point in 19 minutes for Phoenix, which defeated Los Angeles, 99-91, a week ago.
