Jones, Gay lead Grizzlies to final preseason win

Oct 26, 2006 - 1:55 AM AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- With Pau Gasol out for a while, the Memphis Grizzlies will need players like rookie Rudy Gay and Dahntay Jones to step up.

Gay scored 16 points off the bench and Jones added 15 as the Grizzlies posted a 92-82 victory over the Detroit Pistons in the preseason finale for both clubs.

Jones and Gay each scored most of their points in the second half, when Memphis erased a slim deficit and took a 71-64 lead into the fourth quarter.

Gasol, an All-Star forward who led the Grizzlies in scoring the last five seasons, had surgery on his broken left foot September 8 and is out until January.

Hakim Warrick added 13 points and Mike Miller and Jake Tsakalidis each scored 10 for the Grizzlies (4-4), who shot 50 percent (32-of-64) from the field.

Richard Hamilton scored 15 points and Jason Maxiell added 14 for Detroit (5-3). Maxiell scored 21 points in each of his previous two games.

Chauncey Billups and Flip Murray each scored 13 points for the Pistons, who shot 41 percent (34-of-84).

Memphis opens its season next Wednesday vs. New York. Detroit begins its regular season at home against Milwaukee.
