Washington leads Spurs past Warriors

Oct 19, 2007 - 3:23 AM SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Having given several of his players the night off against the up-tempo Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich decided to do the same.

Darius Washington scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out eight assists as the Spurs posted a 116-111 preseason victory over the Warriors in a preseason contest on Thursday.

Manu Ginobili scored 16 points and Francisco Elson added 15 and eight boards for San Antonio, which was coached by the Spurs top assistant Mike Budenholzer after Popovich handed him the reigns before the game.

It was the Spurs' first preseason win against an NBA team with their previous triumph coming against Euroleague champion Panathinaikos.

San Antonio played without regulars Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Bruce Bowen, Brent Barry, Beno Udrih and Jacque Vaughn, who all were in street clothes. Veteran Robert Horry also missed the game for personal reasons.

An undrafted free agent, Washington shot 5-of-9 from the field and scored 13 second-half points and nailed four free throws with inside a minute to play to ice the victory for the Spurs, who shot 51 percent (43-of-84) from the field and outrebounded the Warriors, 51-42.

Baron Davis, Kelenna Azubuike, Al Harrington and Marco Belinelli each scored 17 points for Golden State, which has dropped two straight in exhibition play. Harrington also added 14 rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 42 percent (41-of-98).
