Barnes leads Warriors over SuperSonics in overtime
Oct 24, 2007 - 5:39 AM By Paul Lowenberg PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Kevin Durant did not escape preseason action without an injury.
Matt Barnes scored 16 points to lead eight players in double figures as the Golden State Warriors rallied for a 126-122 overtime victory over Durant and the Seattle SuperSonics in a preseason game on Tuesday night.
The second overall pick in June's draft, Durant limped off the floor in the waning minutes of Tuesday's contest after spraining his left ankle.
The prized scoring machine, who left Texas after one spectacular season, may have to start his hyped NBA career with the bothersome ankle injury. Durant will be re-evaluated in the coming days in preparation for next Wednesday's season opener vs. the Denver Nuggets.
He had 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting before exiting.
Barnes scored 10 of his points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors battled back from an 87-79 deficit at the end of three quarters.
Sonics forward Wally Szczerbiak, who finished with 24 points, hit a layup and was fouled to tie the game at 113-113 with 25.3 seconds left in regulation. But he missed the ensuing free throw and the Warriors were unable to get off a shot before time expired.
Rookie Stephane Lasme broke a 120-120 tie when he hit a free throw with 1:23 left in the extra period to put the Warriors ahead to stay.
Golden State guard Monta Ellis, who had been sidelined with a sprained neck, saw his first action in six preseason games and contributed 15 points to the Warriors' attack. Center Andris Biedrins, who had missed the last four games with a sprained big toe, played 21 minutes, scoring 11 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.
Damien Wilkins led the SuperSonics with 27 points and Earl Watson had 14 assists for Seattle, which fell to 1-5 in preseason play.
The Sonics trailed by as many as 11 points in the first quarter but used an explosive 42-point second quarter to take a 68-61 halftime lead.
Szczerbiak had 14 points in the quarter and Wilkins added 11, including three 3-pointers. Wilkins' 24-foot jumper with 2:06 remaining in the half gave the Sonics a 59-58 advantage and triggered a 12-3 run before the intermission.
Warriors guard Stephen Jackson, who faces a seven-game suspension to start the season, did not suit up for the game.
