Blazers, Grizzlies each seek second win of the season
Nov 9, 2007 - 3:30 PM Memphis (1-3) at Portland (1-3) 10:00 pm ESTPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers will try to build off their recent success when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday.
After suffering three straight losses on the road, the Blazers held on for a 93-90 triumph over the then-undefeated New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday.
With fans having to wait until next season to finally see No. 1 overall selection Greg Oden take the floor, the trio of Martell Webster, Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge have been the main attractions this season.
Webster has more than doubled his average from last season, Roy is becoming the go-to player in crunch time and Aldridge provides the much needed scoring in the paint.
The Grizzlies also picked up their first win of the season after handing the Seattle SuperSonics a 105-98 setback at KeyArena on Wednesday.
Rudy Gay scored 25 points and Mike Miller chipped in 20 as Memphis help first-year coach Marc Iavaroni earn his first career win.
"We dug in," Iavaroni said. "I think the guys realized they were in a fight, and on the road you have to fight to win. It doesn't matter if the other team has an undefeated record or if they are in the same situation as you, trying to get their first win."
Grizzlies rookie guard Mike Conley, who was the fourth overall pick in the draft, made his first appearance of the season when he entered the game with 8:32 remaining in the second quarter. He scored just two points on 1-of-5 shooting.
Portland and Memphis split in four meetings last campaign with each team protecting home-court advantage.
