Roy, Frye help Blazers trump Nuggets

Dec 17, 2007 - 5:02 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers continue to march forward despite the absences of their two 7-footers.

Brandon Roy had 26 points and 11 assists and Channing Frye scored a season-best 20 as the Blazers pushed their winning streak to seven games with Sunday's 116-105 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Travis Outlaw scored 17 points off the bench and former Nugget Steven Blake chipped in 12 for Portland, which has its longest winning streak since the 2002-03 season and ended its nine-game road slide in the series.

"We have a good rhythm now and we are playing good basketball on both ends of the court," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "Both of our units have been playing really well."

With LaMarcus Aldridge (plantar fasciitis) missing his fourth game in a row and No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden (knee) waiting until next season to showcase his skills, Portland has shown it has plenty of young talent.

Frye, the prized player in the trade that sent Zach Randolph to the New New Knicks in the summer, was almost unstoppable through the first two quarters, scoring 18 points to help the Blazers grab a 61-49 bulge at intermission.

"Everyone played unselfishly," Frye said. "I just shot the shots that I work on. Some games I might be the guy, but we have a lot of others and that is what is great about this team."

In the third quarter, Portland added more to its cushion behind an impressive 15-2 surge that was capped by Roy's 21-foot jumper to make it 76-54 with 7:18 remaining.

"Denver has really owned owned us the past couple years so this feels really good," Roy said. "We are getting better as a team and that has been the goal from the beginning of the season."

After an up-and-down start to the season, Roy has been brilliant in December. The reigning Rookie of the Year is averaging 21.6 points, 6.5 assists and 5.3 rebounds in eight games this month.

The Nuggets were unable to respond in the final period as they wasted Allen Iverson's 38-point outburst - the sixth game this season with at least 30 points for the former MVP.

"We should play a lot better at home," Iverson said. "We owe our fans a lot more than that. They played great the whole game and just whooped us."

Considered as a possible threat to San Antonio's crown, Denver once again showed why its inability to play solid defense could be the reason for another first-round exit from the postseason.

Carmelo Anthony had 19 points and two steals for the Nuggets,who shot 48 percent (39-of-80) from the field en route to their second straight loss.

"We definitely took a step back," Nuggets forward Linas Kleiza said. "We had a tough game last night but we felt we we're going to bounce back. We looked flat out there and didn't have any energy."

Denver's Kenyon Martin finished with 14 points and four blocks in his returned from a one-game suspension for a flagrant foul in Wednesday's win over the New Orleans Hornets here.
