Roy, Blazers shooting for ninth straight win
Dec 19, 2007 - 2:09 PM Toronto (15-11) at Portland (13-12) 10:00 pm ESTPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) - With their first winning month since November 2005 secured, the Portland Trail Blazers look to extend their longest winning streak since the 2001-02 campaign when they host the surging Toronto Raptors on Wednesday.
The Trail Blazers won their eighth straight contest Monday with an 88-76 victory over the New Orleans Hornets - matching an eight-game run during the 2002-03 season.
"Hey, this is a lot of fun," said Blazers reserve Raef LaFrentz, who collected a season-high 11 rebounds against New Orleans. "Eight wins in a row. We did it in a lot of different ways."
Brandon Roy, the Western Conference Player of the Week the previous two weeks, got off to another strong start this week with 24 points and eight assists against the Hornets.
"We still got five more home games this month so we have a chance to expand on that a little bit," Roy said. "We are just approaching this with the mentality that we should win every night."
With four more home games after the Raptors contest, the Trail Blazers have an excellent chance to add to the streak. Four more consecutive wins will match the 2001-02 club and eight more will equal the longest winning streak in franchise history set during the 1990-91 season.
The Blazers won't have an easy time with Toronto, which opened a seven-game road trip with an 80-77 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.
Chris Bosh scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half and Jose Calderon added two big hoops down the stretch and dished out nine assists without a turnover.
The Raptors, who held the Clippers to just 26 percent shooting (10-of-38) after the break, have won five of six.
