Turiaf, Odom huge as Lakers coast by Warriors

Nov 2, 2006 - 6:55 AM OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers are proving they are more than a one-man team.

Ronny Turiaf had a career high in points and rebounds and Lamar Odom just missed a triple-double as the Lakers coasted to a 110-98 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Turiaf scored all 23 points of his points in the second half, including a 14-point outburst in the critical third quarter for the Lakers, who held a 38-25 advantage in the period. He also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots.

"What a great lift he provided us off the bench," Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis said of Turiaf. "That was tremendous - offensively, defensively, hustling, effort-wise, rebounding the basketball. It was a nice timely lift, too. We needed that energy."

Odom collected 22 points, nine boards and nine assists for Los Angeles, which improved to 2-0 without Kobe Bryant (knee) in the lineup. Odom is coming off his career-best 34-point showing in Tuesday's 114-106 season-opening win vs. Phoenix.

"It's not about getting 30 (points) it's just a 'W' that counts," Odom said. "We're able to do that again. Hopefully we can keep it going. We're on a roll, it's a big win. I'm just trying to do a little bit of everything."

"He's such a fine ballplayer and the scary thing about Lamar," Rambis said. "I think the sky's the limit for him in terms of his growth and his potential. He can mean so much to our ballclub and our wins and losses, that he can provide the type of input that we need in ballgames in so many different areas. That's what we need him to recognize and be able to stay aggressive and be able to read those situations."

Rambis filled in for coach Phil Jackson, who failed to make the trip as he recovers from offseason hip replacement surgery. Rambis guided the team to a 4-4 showing in the preseason.

Los Angeles took control for good in the third quarter as Odom drained a shot from the arc and then scored on a driving layup with 4:14 remaining to help extend the lead to 75-65.

"We're really, really having some fun on a daily basis so it makes things easier when you have guys like Lamar. That makes life easier for everybody," Turiaf said. "All you have to do pretty much is put the ball in the basket."

Luke Walton scored 15 points for Los Angeles, which shot 45 percent (39-of-86) from the field and held a 56-44 advantage in points in the paint.

Monta Ellis scored 22 points and Troy Murphy contributed 11 and 13 rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 41 percent (34-of-82). Baron Davis chipped in 18 points, but it wasn't enough to make Don Nelson a winner in his return to the bench.

"I'm not happy. We just got outworked," Davis said. "We didn't do everything that we were capable of doing, and that's at least hitting our free throws, not turning the ball over and getting a lot of loose balls. In order for us to win, we have to be the team that makes our shots, make our free throws, get loose balls and force turnovers."
