Iverson, Nuggets set to host 76ers

Jan 6, 2008 - 2:54 PM Philadelphia (14-19) at Denver (20-12) 8:00 pm EST

DENVER (Ticker) - Allen Iverson has his new team in high gear just in time for a battle with his former team.

Iverson will face his former team for the second time when the Denver Nuggets host the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.

After being the No. 1 overall pick, spending 10-plus seasons, making an appearance in the NBA finals, winning a league MVP award and averaging 28.1 points per game, Iverson was traded from the Sixers to the Nuggets in December 2007.

In his first meeting against Philadelphia on January 2 of last season, Iverson was ejected after receiving a second technical foul late in the fourth quarter as the Nuggets fell, 108-97. He had 30 points but seven turnovers before his departure.

This season Iverson is settling in nicely and ranks third in the NBA in scoring at 26.6 points per game to go along with 6.9 assists. The combination of Iverson and Carmelo Anthony has led Denver to five wins in its last six games and first place in the Northwest Division.

Philadelphia is firmly in rebuilding mode in the post-Iverson era and have dropped two in a row and three of five on its current six-game road trip that wraps up Sunday. Andre Miller - the main piece coming back in the Iverson trade - is averaging 16.1 points and 6.3 assists and Andre Iguodala leads the club at 19.1 points.

The Sixers got blown out by the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, 124-93. It was the highest point total allowed all season by Philadelphia, which ranks sixth in the NBA in scoring defense at 95.3 points per game.
