Anthony to be sidelined when Nuggets take on Hawks

Jan 23, 2008 - 3:18 PM Atlanta (17-20) at Denver (24-16) 9:00 pm EST

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets will be without one of the premier players in the NBA when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.

Carmelo Anthony, who is fourth in the league in scoring, will miss Wednesday's contest after spraining his left ankle against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Anthony still is experiencing swelling and discomfort in his sprained left ankle and is listed as day-to-day, the Nuggets announced Tuesday.

Anthony suffered the injury in the second quarter of Monday's 116-99 loss to the Lakers. The star forward took a jump shot and landed on Kobe Bryant's foot, rolling his left ankle. He was taken to the locker room for X-rays, which were negative.

After being re-evaluated Tuesday, the 6-8 Anthony was listed as doubtful for the game with the Hawks. Anthony, 23, is averaging 25.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in 40 games this season for the Nuggets.

The Hawks aim to get back on track against the Nuggets after dropping their third straight game, 111-109, in overtime against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday.

Joe Johnson scored 37 points for Atlanta, which fell three games below .500 for the first time since December 4.
