Parker, Duncan lead Spurs over Suns in OT

Nov 9, 2006 - 4:19 AM SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Tony Parker and Tim Duncan showed the Phoenix Suns how to close out a game.

Parker scored 29 points and Duncan added 26 and 14 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs used a late surge for a 111-106 overtime triumph over the slumping Suns, who dropped their third straight game.

Fabricio Oberto made all 11 of his shots en route to career highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who had five scorers in double figures. Oberto tied a franchise record for shooting percentage in a game.

"Well, most of the time I play close to the basket, so I've had a few nights," Oberto said. "The most important thing is the way that we played and that we won the game in overtime."

"He's (Oberto) becoming really confident. He does all the fundamentals and he knows how to play the game," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It's hard not to be impressed with him. He was special (Wednesday). "He's the ugliest productive player I've ever been around. He's like a bull in a china shop."

The Spurs opened the extra session with a 10-2 surge for a 111-103 advantage capped by Parker's floater in the lane with 1:14 remaining.

"When you play a team like the Spurs, it always goes down to the wire. They're a great team," Suns guard Raja Bell said. "Unfortunately, we lost but we have four more meetings, not including the playoffs. There is plenty of season left to get better."

San Antonio erased a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Duncan scored on a hook off the glass and Parker converted a three-point play for a 98-97 edge with 39 seconds remaining.

Bell's 3-pointer from the left corner cut the deficit to 101-100 with 7.5 seconds left. After Duncan missed a pair of free throws, Bell was fouled on the ensuing possession and split a pair from the line to send the game to overtime.

"It was a great comeback. We had big plays after big plays and good stops," Parker said. "But when Timmy missed the free throw, I was like 'ahh, that was a good comeback.' But stuff happens, and Raja missed one too."

"I might have counted my chickens before they hatched or whatever the term is," said Bell, who scored 20 points. "I had a chance to ice it, but I missed it."

Manu Ginobili and Brent Barry scored 12 points apiece for San Antonio, which shot 42 percent (42-of-100) and scored 52 points in the paint.

Two-time MVP Steve Nash had 20 points and 11 assists and Shawn Marion added eight points and a season-high 16 rebounds for the Suns, who shot 49 percent (46-of-93) and held a 20-7 advantage in fast break points.

In his first start of the season, Suns forward Amare Stoudemire had 16 points in 15 minutes, showing signs of explosiveness with a monstrous one-handed jam on Duncan in the second quarter. The 23-year-old had microfracture surgery on his knee over a year ago and is still recovering.
