Nuggets face Spurs in another key West battle

Mar 10, 2008 - 1:54 PM Denver (37-25) at San Antonio (43-19) 8:30 pm EDT

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) - A recent surge has pushed the San Antonio Spurs near the top of the Western Conference standings. The Denver Nuggets are just hoping to be part of the mix.

The two teams meet for the third time on Monday and are separated by only four games in the standings, but are in vastly different circumstances. Defending NBA champion San Antonio trails only the Los Angeles Lakers by a single game, while the Nuggets are two games behind eighth-place Golden State in the loaded West.

The Spurs are 8-2 in their last 10 games, but are coming off consecutive losses at Denver and Phoenix. San Antonio kicks off a three-game road trip following Monday's game that includes stops in New Orleans and Detroit.

The Spurs have won six straight at home and are 26-5 overall. The Nuggets are 12-18 on the road and are coming off a 132-105 loss at Utah on Saturday.

Denver shot 50 percent in the first half, yet trailed by 23 at halftime after the Jazz made 15 of 21 shots in the second quarter. Nuggets' forward Kenyon Martin did not return after suffering a mild concussion nine minutes into the game.

Monday's game is the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between two teams. Denver has won two of the first three games with the home team winning each time.
