Spurs, Hornets close out season series

Mar 12, 2008 - 3:03 PM San Antonio (44-19) at New Orleans (42-20) 8:00 pm EDT

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs aim to maintain the top spot in the Southwest Division on Wednesday when they visit the New Orleans Hornets.

The defending NBA champion Spurs have won 16 of their last 19 contests and lead the red-hot Houston Rockets (43-20) by one game in the division standings. New Orleans is just 1 1/2 games off the pace.

San Antonio bounced back from consecutive losses Monday with a 107-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Duncan scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Spurs, who are one-half game behind the Los Angeles Lakers (45-19) for the No. 1 spot in the Western Conference.

The Spurs have won two of three meetings this season with New Orleans, splitting the two contests in San Antonio and winning their only previous trip here.

A victory in Wednesday's season-series finale would give the Spurs the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Hornets, who had their three-game winning streak snapped Saturday with a 106-96 loss to Houston.
