Hornets attempt to close gap on Lakers

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) - The Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Hornets square off on Friday, seperated by 1 1/2 games in the race for the best record in the Western Conference.

Both teams have won four of their last five games, highlighted by the play of Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul. Bryant is averaging 32.4 points and 7.4 rebounds during the strectch, while Paul is averaging 27.6 points and 14 assists in his last five contests.

The teams have split the first two games of the four-game series, each winning on the road. The Lakers have won three of their last four road games against the Hornets, owners of a 23-10 home record this season.

All-Star David West returned to the New Orleans lineup for Wednesday's 100-75 home win over San Antonio, after missing three games with a sprained ankle. The game kicks off a four-game road trip for Los Angeles that includes stops at Houston, Dallas and Utah.

"It's time to have some fun and play some of the top teams in the NBA," Lakers' forward Luke Walton said. "There's going to be hostile environments, every possession is going to be crucial. That's a lot of fun for a player."
