Nets take on Wizards without Jefferson
Nov 12, 2006 - 4:00 PM New Jersey (2-2) at Washington (3-2) 6:00 pm ESTWASHINGTON (Ticker) - Despite being without one of their best players, the New Jersey Nets are glad to be facing a team other than the defending champions.
The Nets will take on another playoff team from 2005-06 when they face the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center on Sunday.
New Jersey has lost to the Miami Heat twice in their first four games this season after being eliminated by the eventual NBA champions in the playoffs for the second straight campaign.
Vince Carter scored a season-high 33 points in the 113-106 loss to the Heat on Thursday. The Nets also suffered another setback when forward Richard Jefferson limped to the locker room with 4:46 left in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle. He scored 16 points before departing.
Jefferson, who is out indefinitely, has a grade two sprain, which could cause the forward to miss anywhere from 2-8 weeks if there is ligament damage.
However, New Jersey is used to playing without Jefferson. He missed 49 games in 2004-05 with a left wrist injury. But it won't be easy for the Nets, who will be facing the highest scoring trio in the NBA.
Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison have combined to average 70.0 points per game this season - the highest total for a three-man combination.
Arenas scored 13 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter as the Wizards rallied for a 116-111 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in their last game. Arenas, who scored 40 and 44 points in his first two contests at Verizon Center this season, had 16 in the first half.
Jamison sealed Friday's win with some impressive play down the stretch. He grabbed a rebound as the shot clock was about to expire and put in a layup in one motion to give the Wizards the lead for good at 108-106 with 1:50 remaining.
Jamison converted an errant pass by Butler on the Wizards' ensuing possession into a spinning layup to make it 110-106 with 58 seconds left.
New Jersey has lost three of its last four contests in Washington.
No one has shouted yet.
