Lakers seeking top spot in the West
Mar 28, 2008 - 12:56 PM Memphis (18-53) at LA Lakers (49-23) 10:30 pm EDTLOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Even without Pau Gasol, the Los Angeles Lakers are still battling for the top spot in the Western Conference.
The Lakers look to take control of first place on Friday when they host they lowly Memphis Grizzlies.
Los Angeles is just percentage points behind New Orleans (49-21) for first place in the conference, but have played two more games than the Hornets and have a favorable schedule down the stretch - seven of their last 10 games are at home.
Gasol, who was acquired from the Grizzlies in a blockbuster trade earlier this season, could be in uniform against his former team after missing the last seven games with an ankle injury. The Lakers are 4-3 without the 7-footer in the lineup .
The Grizzlies failed to end their miserable play at Arco Arena on Wednesday, suffering their 19th consecutive road loss to the Sacramento Kings during a 107-106 overtime setback.
Hakim Warrick scored 26 points to lead Memphis, which now sits just 1 1/2 games in front of the Seattle SuperSonics (17-55) for last place in the conference.
