It was Dwight Powell vs. Kevon Looney in Game 3 for the tip-off with Looney helping the Warriors gain the first possession. Neither of these guys has been particularly good at winning the tip-off — Powell is now just 6-for-13, and Looney is 3-for-9.

Dallas has been above average by hitting  59% of their game’s first baskets while Golden State is well-below average at 38%. With Dallas’ better chances of gaining the first possession and better first basket percentage, there’s a great chance someone on the Mavericks is getting the first points. In Game 4, it went back and forth with possesion changing four times before Jalen Brunson grabbed the first points of the game.

The Mavericks have hit three of the four first baskets in this series, all of them coming from a point guard. Luka Doncic comes into this game having made six of the last 10 first baskets for the Mavericks, including Game 2, and Game 3 of this series. He leads the team by attempting the first field goal in 32% of their games. With Luka chucking 24 shots per game in the last three, there’s no doubt he wants to get the Mavs on the board in another do-or-die.
