Artest makes debut as Rockets host Grizzlies

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Ron Artest will make his debut with Houston on Wednesday when the Rockets host the Memphis Grizzlies in the season opener for both teams.

Artest joins Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming in hopes of making Houston a serious contender in the Western Conference.

The 6-7 forward is one of the league's premier defenders and will help take some of the pressure off McGrady on the offensive end. Artest averaged 20.5 points in 55 games with the Sacramento Kings last season.

The Rockets had a franchise-record 22-game winning streak at one point last season, but the team ultimately lost in the first round to the Utah Jazz for the second consecutive year.

Having Yao healthy will be a huge key for Houston. The 7-6 center has missed at least 27 games in each of the past three seasons, including the final 32 contests last year with a stress fracture in his left foot.

The Grizzlies are just hoping to be more competitive in 2008-09.

Memphis is coming off its second straight 22-60 campaign and will be relying on youngsters Rudy Gay, Mike Conley, Jr. and rookie O.J. Mayo to try and improve this season.

Gay led the team in scoring a year ago at 20.1 points per game.
