Howard, Magic open season against Hawks
Oct 29, 2008 - 10:15 AM Atlanta at Orlando, 7:00 p.m. EDTORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The proud owner of a gold medal, Dwight Howard opens the 2008-09 season looking to lead his Orlando Magic to some NBA hardware.
A pair of playoff teams from a year ago meet when Howard and the Magic open their season against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday.
A member of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal winning team in Beijing, Howard turns his attention to defending the Magic's Southeast Division title.
The double-double machine averaged 20.7 points and 14.2 rebounds last season for Orlando, which fell in the second round of the playoffs in five games to the Detroit Pistons.
Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis provide Howard with potent scoring threats on the perimeter for an offense that led the Eastern Conference last season at 104.5 points per game.
The Hawks are looking to build on an admirable playoff performance against the Boston Celtics last season. Atlanta pushed the eventual NBA Champions to seven games before bowing out with a 34-point loss in Game Seven.
When sixth-man Josh Childress left for a lucrative contract with the Greek team Olympiakos, the Hawks lost a versatile member of their roster.
Despite the loss, the Hawks still boast a talented starting five, highlighted by leading scorer Joe Johnson (21.7) and high-flying Josh Smith.
The emergence of second-year center Al Horford and a full-season with point guard Mike Bibby, who was acquired mid-season last year from Sacramento, will be vital if Atlanta wishes to return to the postseason.
