76ers try to pick up first road win vs. Magic
Nov 6, 2008 - 11:16 AM Philadelphia (2-3) at Orlando (2-2), 8:00 pm ESTORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers get their third shot at their first road win of the season on Thursday when they visit the Orlando Magic.
Considered a prime contender to make some noise in the Eastern Conference, the Sixers have gotten off to an erratic start. Fueled by free-agent acquisition Elton Brand and star-in-the-making Andre Iguodala, they have been able to score in bunches at times, averaging 120.5 points per game in their two victories.
However, in losses, that explosive offense has gone dormant. The Sixers have scored less than 90 points in each of their three defeats, most recently a 106-83 loss on Wednesday to a Miami Heat squad hardly known for its defensive prowess. Twenty-six Philadelphia turnovers tend to make things easy on an opponent.
Brand hasn't quite hit his stride yet, but he has posted four double-doubles in five games and is leading the team with 17.5 points and 11.8 boards per game.
He and the Sixers will try to snap out of their road struggles against a Magic team in the middle of a homestand and looking for its third straight win. Orlando dropped its first two games but has rebounded nicely the last two games. All-Star center Dwight Howard, not surprisingly, has been the driving force.
The newly minted gold medalist is averaging 21.8 points, 14.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game while shooting 62 percent from the field.
The Magic won three of four meetings with the Sixers last year.
