Grizzlies losing despite surge by Mayo

Nov 12, 2008 - 11:23 AM New York (4-3) at Memphis (3-5) 8:00 p.m. EST

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- O.J. Mayo is having no trouble scoring, but that has not helped the Memphis Grizzlies win.

Mayo and the Grizzlies try to snap a two-game losing streak on Wednesday when they host the New York Knicks.

The third overall pick in June's NBA Draft, Mayo has recorded back-to-back 30-point performances. However, his 31-point effort on Sunday was not enough to lift Memphis, as they dropped a 100-90 decision to the Denver Nuggets.

The 21-year-old guard poured in a season-high 33 points on Monday, but the Grizzlies suffered a 107-102 setback to the Phoenix Suns.

Despite the losses, Mayo's teammates don't believe he is shooting too much or hogging the ball.

"O.J. is a phenomenal player and he kept us in the game for a long stretch of time," Rudy Gay said following the loss to the Suns. "He made the right decisions. When he should have passed he passed and when it was time to make the basket he made it."

The Knicks had a three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, falling 92-80 to the San Antonio Spurs. Jamal Crawford had 28 points as New York fell to 0-3 when being held under 100 points.
