Lakers look to begin new winning streak vs. Warriors

Jan 7, 2009 - 11:35 AM LA Lakers (27-6) at Golden State (10-26) 10:30 p.m. EST

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers had a pair of winning streaks come to end in their last game. A meeting with the Golden State Warriors is exactly what they need to get back on track.

After dropping the final contest of a five-game homestand, the Lakers return to the road Wednesday for a meeting with the slumping Warriors.

Despite 39 points from reigning MVP Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles endured a 116-105 setback to the New Orleans Hornets on Tuesday. The loss snapped a 15-game home winning streak and was the Lakers' first defeat after six straight victories overall.

The game was not the only loss for Los Angeles on Tuesday. Lamar Odom was lost for the rest of the contest and possibly longer when he hyperextended his right knee with 3:03 remaining in the second quarter.

Odom, who was scheduled to undergo an MRI on the knee Wednesday morning, injured it when he landed awkwardly under the Hornets' basket after grabbing a rebound.

A starter last season when Los Angeles went to the NBA Finals, Odom has come off the bench this campaign. The Lakers should be able to overcome his absence against the Warriors, who have dropped four of their last five games.

Golden State concluded a three-game road trip with a 119-114 setback to the Utah Jazz on Monday, losing captain Stephen Jackson for two weeks due to a strained right hamstring in the process.

Late in the first half, Utah's Deron Williams ran around several screens en route to a tear-drop shot in the lane with three-tenths of a second remaining. Jackson came up limping after the play and did not return.
