Clippers try to follow up big night vs. Hawks
Feb 7, 2009 - 1:05 PM LA Clippers (11-39) at Atlanta (29-20) 7:00 p.m. ESTATLANTA (Ticker) -- Fresh off their most explosive offensive performance of the season, the Los Angeles Clippers will see if lightning can strike twice as they near the end of a seven-game road trip.
The Clippers continue their trek through the South as they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night.
Los Angeles was struggling through a seven-game slide before Friday, when it finally snapped out of it with a 126-105 rout over the Memphis Grizzlies. Not only did the Clips set a season high in points - they did it in historically explosive fashion. They set a franchise record with 16 3-pointers and shot 59 percent from the floor en route to their first win since January 23.
They have two nights left on their road trip - the meeting with Atlanta followed by a visit to Charlotte two nights later. The Hawks have recovered nicely from a difficult January, winning a pair of games on the road over the improving Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Bobcats.
Most impressively, the Hawks did so without their top player and leading scorer, Joe Johnson, who has missed the last two contests while battling the flu. Without him on Friday, Marvin Williams picked up the slack with a 29-point effort that included an 18-of-20 showing from the foul line to lead a second-half comeback for Atlanta.
