Ex-Breaker Webster signs with NBL's Perth
Mar 30, 2017 - 2:43 AM NBL champions Perth have signed troubled guard Corey Webster following his release from the New Zealand Breakers. The Tall Blacks star played 15 games in a 2016-17 season interrupted by injury and a court appearance on assault charges.
Wildcats coach Trevor Gleeson said he jumped at the chance to recruit the 28-year-old after the Breakers decided he'd be better off resuming his basketball career outside Auckland.
"Corey's a world-class shooter. One of the best shooters I've coached against," Gleeson said.
"He'll bring a different perimeter threat out there.
"We've played against him a number of times in the finals. To have that firepower on our team, combined with our defence, it's going to open up a lot of avenues for our guys."
Webster averaged 12 points last season, well down on his 20 points per game in 2015-16.
He spent almost a decade with the Breakers and was involved in three of their four NBL titles.
He missed their triumph in 2011-12, banned for the season following a drug violation.
After going on to become one of the Breakers' premier players courtesy of his outside shooting prowess, Webster trialled with NBA team New Orleans Pelicans in 2015 but fell short of a contract offer.
He is looking forward to a fresh start in Western Australia.
"To be continuing my career at one of the best organisations going around, who have won three of the last four titles, is very exciting for me," Webster said.
