Providence beats St John's 74-59

Jan 4, 2010 - 1:13 AM NEW YORK(AP) -- Sharaud Curry scored a season-high 26 points, leading Providence to its first Big East win of the season in a 74-59 victory over St. John's on Sunday.

Jamine Peterson added 14 points, Brian McKenzie 12 and Marshon Brooks 10 for the Fryars (9-5, 1-1), who have won 12 of their last 14 against St. John's. The Red Storm (10-4, 0-2) still lead the all-time series 55-42.

St. John's led by one point at halftime and 54-50 as late as 7:34 to play, but collapsed late in the game. The Fryars went on a 24-5 run to close out the game's final 7 minutes, as St. John's could muster just a pair of field goals from Justin Brownlee during the spree.

Providence scored 21 points off of 23 Red Storm turnovers.

Brownlee finished with 14 points and D.J. Kennedy added 13 for the Red Storm, who have lost three of their last four after opening the season with nine wins in 10 games.
