SMU pulls away late to defeat Rice 67-57
Feb 18, 2010 - 3:52 AM DALLAS(AP) -- Derek Williams scored 20 points and SMU pulled away late to defeat Rice 67-57 Wednesday night.Mouhammad Faye added 15 points for the Mustangs (12-13, 5-6 Conference USA), who ended the game with a 12-2 run.
Lucas Kuipers scored 19 points and Connor Frizzelle had 16 for the Owls (8-17, 1-10).
After a 3-pointer by Kuipers and a layup by Frizzelle tied the score at 55 with 4:02 to play, SMU responded with 12 straight points. Faye and Williams each scored five points during the run. Trey Stanton hit a jumper with 12 seconds left for Rice to make the final margin 10.
The Mustangs led 34-31 at halftime and increased their advantage to eight before the Owls rallied to briefly take a 48-47 advantage, their only lead of the second half.
